INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS: THE MEAN MIMIC

As a leading provider of urogynecology care in Houston, we understand that interstitial cystitis (IC) can be a challenging condition to diagnose and treat. IC causes pain as the bladder fills, and while science doesn’t fully understand what causes it, accurate diagnosis can take up to 2 years due to its similarity to recurrent bladder infections.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t help. Dr. Christi has developed an Interstitial Cystitis Pathway with many treatment options that can be tailored to your symptoms and needs.

Dr. Christi Explains HOW TO TREAT INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS

Interstitial Cystitis is a painful bladder syndrome that sometimes mimics a UTI. This is often difficult to diagnose. Visit Dr. Christi if you are experiencing urinary frequency and pain and think you may be suffering from IC.

Causes and Risk Factors of Painful Bladder Syndrome

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition with an unclear cause, though it is believed to result from a combination of factors. Potential causes include damage to the bladder lining, which may allow irritating substances in urine to penetrate and inflame the bladder wall. An autoimmune response, chronic infections, or nerve dysfunction may also contribute to the development of IC. Several risk factors can increase susceptibility to the condition, including having a history of bladder infections, pelvic trauma, or other chronic pain conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or fibromyalgia. Genetic predisposition and stress may also play a role, though research is ongoing to better understand the exact mechanisms behind IC.

IC FAQs

Get all your questions answered about Interstitial Cystitis Treatment atLifeSculpt By ChristiMD™️.

Interstitial cystitis is a very painful urological disorder where patients experience pain as the bladder fills up, resulting in more frequent bathroom visits.

We do not fully understand what causes IC, but we do know that it involves increased pain signals on the nerves and an increased histamine response in the bladder wall. Often, there is a food sensitivity related to IC, and dietary changes can be very helpful.

Many patients take up to 2 years for IC to be diagnosed before they can seek interstitial cystitis treatment in Houston, TX. The problem stems from IC mimicking the symptoms and issues associated with recurrent bladder infections.
There are two types of IC. One type is bladder-centric, and often this type includes an ulcer in the bladder.

The second type of painful bladder syndrome is related to other conditions in the body that cause widespread pain, such as fibromyalgia, IBS and migraines. It is important to address these conditions as well.
