How IPL Photofacial Works

Our IPL Photo Facial systems use visible light in a spectrum of wavelengths to treat sun damaged skin, brown spots, tiny red facial vessels (telangiectasia), and overall redness.
Prior to treatment, you’ll meet with our team for a one-on-one consultation to make a proper recommendation.

During the treatment, the brown spots and superficial red vessels absorb this light energy, beginning the process to remove and correct the sun damaged skin.

Our IPL Photo Facial systems selectively target the sun-damaged pigment without damaging the normal skin area. These procedures use a light-based technology that produces wavelengths to react with the affected sun spot pigment causing it to follow a path of healing and flaking off over a short period of time.

Treatment time for an entire face will take approximately 30 minutes, while a neck and chest is around 45 minutes.

Two passes of the device placed directly on the skin provide the basis for your redness to begin to lighten and brown spots darken and then flake off.

By using IPL, Dr. Christi and her staff have the unique ability to shift the treatment wavelengths depending on the application and skin type. This means we can treat more skin tones and accommodate the melanin and hemoglobin absorption as well as the cooling and time of pulse delivery.

Patients receiving an IPL photofacial in Houston should expect all of the following after treatment

  • Localized redness may occur in treatment area for up to 24 hours
  • Crusting and darkening of brown spots beginning after 24 hours and for up to 3-4 days
  • Flaking of “peppery looking spots” over a period of a week to two weeks
  • Re-treatment can be performed once the crusting has cleared; generally 1-3 weeks
  • You should avoid artificial tanning, sun exposure without sun protection, in the 4 weeks following treatment

While every patient is different, a typical treatment protocol consists of a series of 3 to 5 treatments performed every 2 to 4 weeks.
