When we think of hormonal changes, menopause is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But in her latest LifeSculpt by ChristiMD podcast episode, Dr. Christi turns her focus to the men, breaking down a little-talked-about but very real phenomenon: andropause, often referred to as “male menopause.”

In her signature empowering style, Dr. Christi presents a compelling case for recognizing and addressing low testosterone (Low T), and she makes it clear that andropause is nothing to ignore. It’s not just about aging gracefully, it’s about aging purposefully, with energy, vitality, and joy intact.

What Is Andropause?

Andropause refers to the gradual decline in testosterone that typically begins around age 30, with levels dropping approximately 1% per year. While it’s more subtle than the abrupt hormonal shifts of menopause, the effects can be just as impactful. By the time many men reach their 40s and 50s, they begin to feel the symptoms—and they’re often brushed off as “normal aging.”

But just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to live with it.

1. Recognizing the Symptoms of Low T

Low testosterone can affect nearly every aspect of a man’s life—from physical health to emotional well-being to relationships. Some of the key symptoms Dr. Christi discusses include:

2. Reduced libido and erectile dysfunction

Testosterone plays a crucial role in sexual desire and function. When levels drop, spontaneity and performance often follow.

3. Fatigue and low motivation

That “blah” feeling or desire to just lounge around isn’t just in your head, it might be in your hormones.

4. Mood changes, depression, and anxiety

Testosterone helps fuel confidence and mental clarity. When it’s low, it can contribute to a depressed or anxious state of mind.

5. Muscle loss and increased body fat

Especially around the belly—hello, “dad bod”! Testosterone is key to maintaining lean muscle mass and a healthy metabolism.

6. Sleep disturbances and brain fog

Insomnia, poor concentration, and forgetfulness can all be linked to low testosterone levels.

7. Breast swelling or tenderness

A hormonal imbalance with higher estrogen levels can lead to uncomfortable and unwanted changes like gynecomastia.

8. Loss of height and bone density

Testosterone also helps maintain strong bones. Without it, men are at greater risk for osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Dr. Christi makes a powerful point: “We’re designed with a purpose. The longer we’re healthy, the longer we can live out that purpose.”

Testing and Treatment

Testing for low testosterone is simple—just a quick blood draw. But too often, it’s overlooked in routine evaluations. Many men are told their levels are “normal” if they fall within a wide lab range (usually 350–500 ng/dL), but that doesn’t mean they’re optimal.

Dr. Christi recommends aiming for testosterone levels in the 1,000–1,200 ng/dL range, which is where most men feel their best.

And yes, treatment is available and it’s safe. The myth that testosterone causes prostate cancer has been thoroughly debunked. In fact, some studies suggest that balanced testosterone levels might even reduce the risk. What matters most is proper monitoring and working with a knowledgeable provider.

Hormone Therapy Options

When it comes to treating low T, Dr. Christi prefers testosterone pellet therapy. These small pellets are inserted under the skin every 4–6 months and offer a steady, natural release of testosterone.

Other options include:

  • Topical gels: Effective but often inconvenient due to daily application and the risk of transfer to partners.
  • Injections: Fast-acting but can cause peaks and valleys in hormone levels and may include synthetic additives.

Pellets, Dr. Christi says, are bioidentical, precisely dosed, and far more convenient for most men.

Why It Matters

Addressing andropause isn’t about vanity, it’s about vitality. It’s about men feeling strong, mentally sharp, emotionally stable, and sexually healthy well into their later decades. It’s about continuing to lead, love, and live with purpose.

“If you’ve lost your energy, motivation, or that drive to conquer the day, it might not be burnout—it might be low T,” says Dr. Christi.

Take the Next Step

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms discussed in this episode, don’t brush them off as just part of getting older. You deserve to feel strong, energized, and mentally sharp at every stage of life.
